The vampire bat which lives in the rainforests of South America sucks blood. It lives on the blood of other animals like cattle and horses. All bats come out at night. When animals are asleep at night, the vampire bat lands on the ground near its victim. Then it walks towards it on all fours. With its dagger-like front teeth, it makes a slit within the skin of its prey. After that, it curls its tongue into a V-shape in order that blood may run into it. Sometimes the bat drinks so much blood that it faces difficulty in flying. But the quantity of blood lost by the animal isn't such a lot that it's weakened. There is only a danger of infection from the wound. In a single night, Ã colony of 100 vampire bats can suck blood from 25 cows or 14,000 chickens. Bats are the only mammals that can fly. There are about 900 species of bats and are found on all the continents except Antarctica.
